Prior to his diagnosis, he was an avid soccer player and played 5 times a week. After spending 4 months 50% non-weight bearing and sleeping in a Petrie cast, he had a varus osteotomy on January 10, 2018 and has been 100% non weight bearing as well as in a removable spica cast since then. Luai drew “Perthes is a Superpower” because through his journey he has realized that having Perthes doesn’t make him any less stronger or heroic than any other person. I was heartbroken but things are getting better. The hardest thing I had to give up was running and jumping and at the start dancing. I have been through two operations, nine weeks in casts, lots of traction and of course LOTS of physiotherapy. I chose a bow and arrow to represent strength and the flowers I drew are a reminder that no one is alone. I spent 8 months in a wheel chair and 2 years on crutches. I would go see Dr. Stuart Braun at Tufts Floating Hospital in Boston every few months and would always come home sad knowing that I would continue to sit on the sidelines of recess and gym class. Though I knew I was doing what was right for me, pushing through and persevering until my legs were healthy again. I feel like I was given a second chance back when I started walking again in August 2016, I relearned to ski that winter and was back on my sailing team that summer. I had to be on crutches and in a wheelchair from October 2017 to February 2018 after a Valgus Osteotomy but, it was worth it because it gave me the gift of less pain. Prior to his diagnosis, he was an avid soccer player and played 5 times a week. After spending 4 months 50% non-weight bearing and sleeping in a Petrie cast, he had a varus osteotomy on January 10, 2018 and has been 100% non weight bearing as well as in a removable spica cast since then. Luai drew “Perthes is a Superpower” because through his journey he has realized that having Perthes doesn’t make him any less stronger or heroic than any other person. I was heartbroken but things are getting better. The hardest thing I had to give up was running and jumping and at the start dancing. I have been through two operations, nine weeks in casts, lots of traction and of course LOTS of physiotherapy. I chose a bow and arrow to represent strength and the flowers I drew are a reminder that no one is alone. I spent 8 months in a wheel chair and 2 years on crutches. I would go see Dr. Stuart Braun at Tufts Floating Hospital in Boston every few months and would always come home sad knowing that I would continue to sit on the sidelines of recess and gym class. Though I knew I was doing what was right for me, pushing through and persevering until my legs were healthy again. I feel like I was given a second chance back when I started walking again in August 2016, I relearned to ski that winter and was back on my sailing team that summer. I had to be on crutches and in a wheelchair from October 2017 to February 2018 after a Valgus Osteotomy but, it was worth it because it gave me the gift of less pain.
